Cigarette Blamed For San Francisco Fire That Injured Two

December 5, 2011

Cigarettes are not only hazardous to your health because of the smoke, but also because of the fire hazard they create. A lit cigarette is being blamed for starting a fire in a San Francisco apartment building that left one resident and a firefighter injured. According to CBS –San Francisco the blaze erupted at around 8:00 in the morning on Sunday at 347 Eddy Street.

Firefighters who responded to the scene stated an initial investigation showed that the fire originated with a cigarette butt that was thrown down in a lightwell and not properly extinguished. The fire grew until it consumed nearly six stories of the building. Although the fire remained mostly contained in the lightwell, flames had managed to seep into several surrounding walls. This meant firefighters had to tear out walls in several residencies and hallways in order to fully extinguish the flames.

No injuries were reported except for a firefighter and resident who required treatment for smoke inhalation. They were both taken to a local area hospital where they received treatment and were released.

Firefighters say the best way to avoid an accident like this one is to not smoke indoors and to always use proper cigarette receptacles to fully extinguish a cigarette or cigar when done.

Former Employees Blow The Whistle Before And After Gas Leak Explosion

August 8, 2011

Several former employees of the utility company, Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E), have come forward to tell the public about how the company ignored repeated warnings of safety hazards concerning the integrity of gas lines throughout San Bruno, California, prior to an explosion last year that killed eight people, injured dozens, and left 55 home uninhabitable.

A gas-crew welding foreman told The Oakland Tribune, he missed out on high-paying overtime hours after telling the company’s Manager of Investigations of “potentially explosive gas leaks” and falsified records. The Manager of Investigations was subsequently laid off after taking the findings of unfixed gas leaks, which were claimed to be fixed or to not exist at all, to PG&E higher-ups. He sued PG&E for wrongful termination in 2008, but the case was settled out of court for an undisclosed sum days after the filing was made.

A union safety official was also threatened with his job by PG&E executives after bringing to light dangerous working conditions for employees of the company. Allegedly, two PG&E supervisors detained him in a hotel room overnight, threatened to fire him, and made him submit to a psychiatric exam. According to a lawsuit filed against PG&E, he was found to be “mentally fit, except for anxiety that was attributable to his having been severely mistreated by PG&E.”

Firework Safety Vital for Alameda County

July 4, 2011

With today being our country’s Independence Day, many people in Alameda County are scouring out locations that will be suitable for their own personal fireworks display. The heat that has recently dried out the area, combined with the open flames and sparks of fireworks, could prove to be quite a hazardous situation.

In fact, the National Council On Firework Safety (NCFS) reported an estimated 7,000 injuries caused by fireworks in 2008 alone. That number was an all-time low, and the council credits consumer education on safety as the main contributing factor to the decrease in injuries.

According to ABC News 7, one firework retailer in Dublin, California, offers a safety warning to each customer who comes through the purchase line, “We ask them to please stay where it’s legal, we ask them to go to the parks that are designated for firing the fireworks.” Firing from an open area, like a park, can greatly reduce the risk of house and forest fires as hot ashes from the fireworks descend.

The NCFS also suggests that after each firing device has burned out, it should be placed under a watering hose or bucket of water to ensure it is fully extinguished.

The California Fire and Burn Injury Attorneys with Berg Injury Lawyers hope that everyone has a safe and enjoyable Fourth of July Celebration.

Two Firefighters Die In Diamond Heights House Fire

June 6, 2011

Two firefighters have died as a result of a house fire in the Diamond Heights area of San Francisco. KCBS-San Francisco reports the announcement came at a news conference Saturday morning led by San Francisco Fire Chief, Joanne Hayes-White. The announcement was made with the Chief surrounded by friends and family of the victims and more than 100 firefighters. The two men are the first firemen in the department to die in the line of duty in over a decade.

Reportedly, firefighters responded to the call on Thursday about the blaze at the 100 Block of Berkeley Way. The two men were among the first firefighters to enter the four-story home shooting flames high into the sky. At some point while inside, the men were caught in a flashover. A flashover is a surge of flame that overtakes a room, when everything within those walls suddenly ignites at once.

The men were severely burned and transported to San Francisco General Hospital. The first firefighter died Thursday after going into cardiac arrest. The second held on nearly forty hours before passing.

According to the American Burn Association, 3,500 people died in 2010 due to burns sustained in a fire. Dealing with the aftermath of a severe burn can be difficult. From financial burden to physical and mental stress, there are many struggles burn victims must overcome. The California Fire and Burn Injury Attorneys with Berg Injury Lawyers may be able to help struggling burn victims get the care and compensation they deserve.

Firefighter suffers San Francisco burn injury; 48 left homeless

January 6, 2011

The San Francisco Chronicle reports an early-morning San Francisco fire has left 48 people homeless. The two-alarm fire in an apartment complex started early on New Year’s Day.

Several residents suffered minor fire injuries, mostly related to smoke inhalation. One firefighter suffered a San Francisco burn injury to his hand in the blaze.

The cause of the San Francisco fire is still under investigation. Crews had been in the building earlier in the day doing electrical work. The landlord thought a tenant may have been using a candle for light since the power was out, which could be another possible cause of the San Francisco fire.

Firefighters all but concede defeat to raging California fires

The California fires that have been sweeping across the state may have firefighters defeated for the time being. The Santa Ana winds are currently fueling the fire and will continue to do so for the near future, and until the winds die down, the fires will continue to rage.

To date, roughly one million people have fled the affected areas, fearing California fire and burn injuries. The San Diego Fire Captain said, “If it’s this big and blowing with as much wind as it’s got, it’ll go all the way to the ocean before it stops” when referring to the California fires.

So far, there have been at least 45 people injured (many with serious California burn injuries), and several people have died.
