Santa Barbara to Face Wrongful Death Suit

The city of Santa Barbara, California has recently been the subject of a California Supreme Court ruling which states that written, signed waivers do not cover incidents and acts of gross negligence. The ruling is the result of the city of Santa Barbara being charged with gross negligence after a 14-year-old developmentally disabled girl drowned at a local pool during summer camp. The girl’s family filed a California wrongful death lawsuit because the child’s mother signed a liability waiver. The California Supreme Court ruled that these forms of waivers, however, do not shield those responsible in incidences of gross negligence from legal recourse.

Death of four on South San Jose road stuns friends, neighbors

Four people were killed in a San Jose, California car accident on Monday night when a teenage driver lost control of his car, swerved across the road, and slammed into two people who were out for an evening stroll. After the car hit and killed the respected physicist and his wife, it slammed into a tree and exploded, killing the driver and passenger.

Much is unknown about the cause of this senseless California auto accident, and leaves the family and friends of the deceased asking questions they may never find answers to.

California Department of Health Services releases study of 2006 heat wave fatalities

The California Department of Health Services released its 2006 analysis of California deaths relating to the heat wave that afflicted a large part of California between July 15th and August 1st of last year.

The heat wave was responsible for 140 fatalities, and included deaths in Imperial County, Stanislaus, San Joaquin, Fresno, Kern, Sacramento, and San Bernardino, California.

Heat exhaustion can lead to heat stroke and can occur when people aren’t properly hydrated or are dressed in warm clothing. Nausea, vomiting, headache, and fever are symptoms to watch for.

Motorcycle Accident Kills Off-Duty Officer

An off-duty Oakland police officer died in a fatal California motorcycle accident over the weekend. He was identified as Stanley Mock, 38.

It appears the motorcycle accident was the result of poor traction on the road, as the police officer’s motorcycle slid off the road and slammed into a tree.

Unfortunately, fatal California motorcycle accidents are not a rarity, and can happen even to experienced riders exercising caution.

California Water Park Drowning

A four year old boy drowned yesterday in a newly-opened addition to a popular Santa Clara, California water park. The wave pool known as the “Great Barrier Reef” is about half the size of a football field and had only been open about two months before the drowning occurred.

The victim was in the pool with his mother and sister, with four lifeguards posted at the side of the pool, in addition to two other lifeguards on duty in the pool with them.

This is the fifth fatal drowning at the California water park since it opened in 1976.
